Fences

There are four different fencing types seen on the layout.

Retaining Wall and Back Fence

The retaining wall and fence at the back of the layout are both downloaded from SmartModels, printed and stuck onto card. The fence itself is a close match for what’s actually at the top of the shipyard site now. Close to there are a couple of issues where the printed paper hasn’t adhered as well as I’d like but these aren’t visible at normal viewing range.

To mount this fence I put a wooden lath on the back of the baseboard. This has an added advantage that it will space the fence away from the backscene, I’ve found from research at exhibitions that this always looks better.

Corrugated Iron

The corrugated iron fence at the end of the layout uses ScaleScenes TX29 - Aged Corrugated Iron paper on card. The fence posts are just small plastic rod cut to length and spray painted brown. I drilled holes into the baseboard to mount it.

Post and Rail

The prototype for the wooden fence that stops visitors wandering onto the railway is at the Bowes Railway. Originally I intended to scratch build this from plastic rod but using a laser cut fence from ScaleModeScenery was, whilst fiddly and time consuming, a lot easier. I was able to get away with not painting or finishing the fence.

The fencing comes in sections and you have to glue the posts on front and back. To join the sections I cut the post at each end in half then fixed the posts across both halves when the fence was assembled. It works quite well and the joins aren’t obvious. I planned to “plant” the fence into holes in the baseboard but I found the posts weren’t long enough for this so I mounted the fencing to card bases and insterted these into the foam.

Security Fence

This was another ScaleModelScenery product and was assembled in much the same way as the post and rail fence. I found that a coat of grey primer followed by a coat of Humbrol metallic silver spray gives a reasonable representation of galvanised fencing.
